Helen Dean

Helen Dean is a dietitian and counsellor. For mental health professionals, Helen is providing group supervision following Colleen Alford’s FBT training. She is also providing individual supervision following Jess Ryan’s FBT trainings. For dietitians, Helen is providing individual supervision following Fiona Sutherland and Shane Jeffrey’s April training and Jodie Sheraton and Shane Jeffrey’s September training.

Helen Dean has been working as a dietitian for over 20 years. Over this time, she has worked in a variety of settings (clinical, private and University) and has extensive experience in supervising and mentoring students and health professionals. Over the last 10 years, Helen has worked with adolescents, specialising in eating disorders, which also includes disordered eating and dysmorphia. 

More recently Helen has worked at Eating Disorders Victoria and Nourish Nurture and Thrive where she has had the opportunity to work with a range of eating disorder presentations and has also worked in the Paediatric Mental health unit at the Austin hospital. Helen has lectured extensively at Latrobe University since 2013 in various roles which include co-ordinating the undergraduate nutrition course; teaching and tutoring into the nutrition and dietetics program.

Helen is also a registered counsellor and family-based therapist and specialises in providing FBT for children and adolescents experiencing eating disorders and their families. Helen works with parents and children to help them understand the relationship between diet and behaviour as well as other factors such as anxiety, depression, and behavioural issues related to grief, trauma, and family separation. Helen has a very gentle and calm approach and uses a collaborative approach to help individuals and families better understand their behaviours and work towards achieving their goals.

Helen’s supervision style is collaborative, and person centred. She encourages reflective practice and provide guidance and honest feedback to help individuals feel empowered and grow from each experience. Helen is highly respectful of others’ opinions and very passionate about assisting others by providing rich and meaningful learning opportunities and support.
